"A good orator is pointed and impassioned." - Marcus T. Cicero
Role: General Evaluator
More Roles
The role of General Evaluator is to evaluate the meeting as a whole, including the speech Evaluators, and Table Topics if there is no Table Topics evaluator. Evaluation is an important part of the Toastmasters meeting: it identifies areas in need of improvement and reinforces areas of strength. Rather than commenting on every flaw, it’s preferable to focus on one or two main errors and make suggestions for improvement. As well, highlight a couple of things that were done particularly well.
At the meeting, the Toastmaster introduces you:
- Explain the purpose of evaluation and your role as General Evaluator.
- Instruct Evaluators regarding the length of their evaluation and instruct the Timer regarding the lights.
- Introduce each evaluator by name. A detailed introduction is not necessary.
- Ask for the Timer’s report when the last Evaluator is finished.
- Call for a vote for the best evaluator.
- Ask for the Ah-counter and Grammarian reports.
- Conduct the general evaluation using the guidelines given above.
- Return control of the meeting to the Chairperson.
Notes for General Evaluator
- It is not your role to evaluate the individual speakers: this is done by the speech evaluators.
- Ensure that comments regarding weaknesses are accompanied by suggestions for improvement.
- If you wish, you can wait until after your general evaluation to call for the Ah-counter and Grammarian reports.
