Table Topics Master
Table Topics gives the members an opportunity to practice impromptu speaking skills. There are normally certain types of topics that some members will have difficulty with while others will find it easy to speak to that type of topic. The type of topic should be varied from to meeting to meeting to provide each member with the opportunity to develop new skills. Topics should not be limited to those that the majority of members find easy as this will not challenge the members and help them develop those new skills.
1. Explain the purpose of Table Topics which is to develop impromptu speaking skills and to learn to organize our thoughts quickly. Each table topic should have the components of a speech with an opening, body and conclusion as well as body language and eye contact.
2. Explain the specific topic for the evening. Include the length of time for the topics and instructions to the Timer regarding the lights. If it is a hidden topic explain when each speaker should look at the topic.
3. Introduce the Ah-counter/Grammarian and the Timer/Awardsmaster. You may either explain the duties of each position or have the member acting in that position explain the duties.
4. When each member is finished speaking, you should lead the applause for that speaker.
5. When all members are finished, call on the Timer for a report of each speaker's time.
6. After the Timer's report, ask members to vote for the best Table Topics speaker.
7. When the vote is complete, return control of the meeting to the Chairperson.
GENERAL POINTS FOR TOPICMASTER
1. It is not necessary for each member to participate in Table Topics. If there is a large number of members present or if time is limited, you can ask only those who do not have another major role in the meeting to participate.
2. Guests should be encouraged to participate but it should be made clear that they do not have to if they do not feel comfortable
