"A good orator is pointed and impassioned." - Marcus T. Cicero
Role:Table Topics Evaluator
More Roles
The Table Topics Evaluator evaluates the short speeches given by members who participate in Table Topics. Like speech evaluations, Table Topics evaluations provide both praise for things done well and constructive criticism to foster improvement. A good Table Topics speech relates to the topic given, and comprises an opening, a body, and a conclusion.
At the meeting:
- Listen carefully to Table Topics speakers. Jot down their names and brief notes on things that you notice they do well, or could improve upon.
- Move to the front of the room when the last member has finished speaking and wait to be introduced by the Table Topics Master.
- Explain your role as Table Topics Evaluator and give your evaluation, speaking for about two minutes.
- Return control of the lectern to the Table Topics Master.
Notes for the Table Topics Evaluator
Do:
- Balance negative remarks with positive remarks.
- Be objective, offering opinions rather than instructions.
- Address individuals directly if you think they did something particularly well.
Don’t:
- Evaluate what the speaker said: confine your remarks to how the speaker responded to the topic.
- Be overly critical of individuals or compare them with others.
- Focus on small details. You only have a couple of minutes so stick to general comments that are of value to all of the members present.
- Evaluate the Table Topics Master. (The General Evaluator does this.)
